Max Msp & Jitter data spaces and sound

There are many other ways of interacting with data besides switches and sensors. Max MSP and Jitter is quite good at taking data and allowing artists to use that data to give feedback about the world..or universe surrounding us.

New media artist Nathaniel Hartman, has created a visually and sonically complex light work that is activated by pulsar data. The piece examines the timing of 96 rotating pulsars and displays this data as light and sound.

LEDs inside tubes function as abstracted screen displays of either single stars as a pulsing wave or clusters of stars which creates a cacophony of visual and sonic noise. The brightness of the tubes also varies with the stars’ relative distance from Earth, which can give the viewer a sense of the distance of the pulsar.

This installation creates a visceral, sensory experience for the audience with radiation to sound, sound to light, light to sensation as feedback about the nature of celestial pulsars.
